LONG BEACH INVITATIONAL REGATTA

The Long Beach Invitational Regatta is designed to test your crew’s skills and knowledge as well as ingenuity and teamwork in a way that is innovative and enjoyable.
.
The events are based on those of other Sea Scout competitions and from requirements and basic knowledge learned through ordinary. But then, some is just off the wall.
.
For example, does your crew know how to drill? What if they can’t see where they are going? For that matter, how about team pulling blindfolded? What would happen to your Scuttlebutt time if you had to fill the barrel first? Will your general knowledge of seamanship, and scouting survive a game of Jeopardy?
.
Of course, we cannot guarantee that these events will be a part of the regatta in any given year. We strive to find new and exciting events to make this a different regatta each time you come.
.
The Long Beach Invitational Regatta is held each year on the second Saturday in March at the Long Beach Sea Scout Base, 5875 E. Appian Way, Long Beach, California

Let there be FUN!!

On Saturday, March 14, 2009, 66 youth along with 32 adults from 9 ships converged on the Long Beach Sea Scout Base for the 26th Annual Long Beach Invitational Regatta. After the events, the fellowship and the food, all reported having a great time.

This year's events included exercises in knot tying, compass and relative bearing, canoeing, nomenclature, seamanship knowledge, and, believe it or not, singing. In a few of the events, crews had to tie knots with the ends of the lines tied to themselves, know the parts of a sailboat, navigate a compass course and make a boat out of bubble gum.

And the winner is…

Congratulations to the crew of the Del Mar form Newport Beach. For the ninth straight year they finished in first place with 120 points, nineteen points better than the second place ship, Triton, also from Newport Beach. They scored first in 11 of the 15 events.

Hell Drill!

After the events closed, all hands participated in a “Hell Drill” competition. Here the judges remove people from the competition for making mistakes until only one person remains. That person this year was Alec Kettenhofen of the Renegades of Newport Beach. Congratulations Alec for a job well done!

Food!

Special thanks to officers from the Islander as well as all of the other adults who helped prepare lunch. How difficult is it to concentrate on competition in the morning when all you can smell is Barbecue? The food was great and plentiful. Thanks, also, to the Mystic Yankee for providing birthday cake for everyone. We celebrated two birthdays! Some may argue but I think lunch is everyone’s favorite part of the regatta.

Help!

In our effort to keep the Long Beach Invitational Regatta unique, different and original, we need new events. Unfortunately, we seem to be running out of new ideas. We need your help. If you have any ideas, please do not hesitate to share them with us. We have received many great ideas in past years and we know that there are many creative and diabolical minds in this program. Please let us know what the event is and how it works (please provide details). Remember, the object is knowledge and practical skills with an emphasis on fun. We hope to hear from you soon. Thank You.
